Ascent of The Orphan peak near Canmore, Alberta
Ascent of The Orphan peak near Canmore, Alberta
This is my second successful attempt of this peak, after 8 years, this time with the Romanian hiking club including a hiker from my hometown of Sighetu Marmatiei, namely Mugurel
Very hot weather, sunny with a bit of haze from the forest fires, but the views were great.
There were 14 people in total today on this mountain, two of them went further traversing to attempt Middle Sister.
Google Earth intro of our trip with great footage, presenting our route and a lot of scenery surrounding us.

I was about to bivy up on Red Ridge, I saw bushes of buffalo berries, and went to check them out, stepped on a bear scat which had berries in it, right away I descended, got back at 11pm at my truck in the dark but safe.

      Hi Earl. It's unfortunate, of course, but in my opinion it was just a matter of time for this to happen. Without forest management, cutting a perimeter around the town, removing fuel, etc, all it takes is some dry conditions and wind. Which is odd, because we've had a very rainy month of June. Take care.

    Hello my friend Adrian. I got a glimpse of the solar eclipse due to cloudy skies in Ontario. Lovely nature around Calgary. You are right on the issue topic.

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 4 місяці тому

      Was expecting to see at least some form of partial eclipse with the clear skies that day ( quite rare in the past months, mostly cloudy here). The Climate issues are quite obvious if doing research. It pisses me off when they start prescribed fires in May on a windy day, ruining the views and blaming it on Climate change as to having an early season start. Cheers

      Happy Thanksgiving, David! Thanks, yeah, I could have went already hiking but the perfect sunny weather and swimmable water still, plus hill training after kept me in Calgary yet. Soon ,though, I already canceled my YMCA membership, it's time to get the Kananaskis pass. Although, the snow is already at elevation, some 20degrees we've been having (in Calgary) may melt some of it. Else, tome to use microspikes, snowshoes. Yeah, I've never seen the river so low, you can check on rivers alberta site, I check it every time before I go to the river, it's below the minimum on the graph. Cheers.

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 11 місяців тому

      Hi, It's not a hook. I simply added some of the items (croll, tandem pulley) in a knot, to have some weight. It could have been anything, carabiners, etc., whatever you have handy. I hope this helps. Adrian

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 11 місяців тому

      The knot I use, if that's what you're asking, was a mariner knot with a simple overhand knot at the end. It doesn't need to be these. Anything that will hold the items together will do ( figure 8 etc.)

    Holy mother of over complication.

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 11 місяців тому

      It looks complicated, but it's not. You've got a Klemheist knot made with a webbing sling, for slack removal before rappelling and back up. I find this to be the best for the purposes. Being hooked with a grigri+ you will rappel without the need to change the device. Imagine how complicated it would be if you were rappelling with an ATC belay or an 8. The Croll is great for hooking the Tandem, a large pulley, easier to use than a regular mini pulley. The Petzl Ascenders are extra, but great for resting. Which part seems complicated?

      Cheers for that. I've changed the title to osprey I forgot about it. They are impressive at catching fish. I'm pasting info from a site"Ospreys are unusual among hawks in possessing a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind. Barbed pads on the soles of the birds' feet help them grip slippery fish. When flying with prey, an Osprey lines up its catch head first for less wind resistance. "
